Richard Bennett, the United Nations special reporter on human rights issues in Afghanistan, has asked the caretaker government to release women human rights defenders who are in prison.
Mr. Bennett said in a statement that he issued on the occasion of March 8, International Women’s Solidarity Day, that on International Women’s Day, I stand by the women and girls of Afghanistan who are facing fundamental and systematic discrimination in an unprecedented manner. I praise their courage, initiative and leadership in the process of seeking justice.
He has asked the caretaker government to immediately release all the women and girls who, according to him, have been arbitrarily arrested and imprisoned without any conditions.
Mr. Bennett has also requested the caretaker government to respect the rights of women and the rights of Afghan women and girls from, right to education, right to work, right to travel and demand their rights and to provide meaningful and equal participation of women in social life.
With the arrival of March 8th, International Women’s Solidarity Day, Afghan protest movements and human rights activists have continued to demand rights and protested the current situation of women in Afghanistan by issuing statements.
