Coinciding with the 8th of March, International Women’s Solidarity Day, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan – UNAMA, by publishing a statement, called on the caretaker government of Afghanistan to end the restrictions on women and girls.
\nThis organization has also written that if the restrictions against women and girls are not paid attention to, there is a risk for Afghanistan in going towards poverty and further isolation.
\nRoza Otenbayeva, the special representative of the UN Secretary General and head of UNAMA, has emphasized that the current issue of “Invest in women” should make us redouble our efforts to achieve more progress, but it is sad that we see the opposite. There is a negative and disastrous investment going on that causes serious harm to women and girls and only creates obstacles for peace and prosperity.
\nA part of this announcement states: “UNAMA remains concerned that the recent crackdown by the ruling Taliban authorities, for allegedly not following the rules of Islamic clothing, will push women into further isolation due to the fear of arbitrary arrest. Regular consultations conducted by the Organization’s Women’s Department, the United Nations, the International Organization for Migration and UNAMA have done with Afghan women, highlighting the trend of diminishing hope and increasing fear of personal security.”
\nThe announcement quoted Alison Davidian, the UN Special Representative for Women, as saying that the space for Afghan women and girls is shrinking at an alarming rate, which undermines Afghanistan’s future prospects for escaping the devastating cycle of war, poverty and isolation.
